Writing a CV...

Today in my Professional Studies lesson we were asked to, in groups, write down what we thought was appropriate to have in a letter or a email to a designer in regards of work experience, and then also begin writing a suitable CV.
After a discussion our group decided that an email was a much less formal approach, and would be needed to be wrote in a less formal way than say a letter to a designer, we also came to a conclusion to a layout of a letter and a email, starting with a introduction to who you are, why you're writing to them and when you'd be interested in volunteering for some work experience.

Some of our ideas wrote down in quite a creative (messy) way...

We decided that if we were to include images of our work, they'd be attached on a seperate page at the end of the email/letter, in order to look much more professional.

With regards to starting our CV's, we thought about an appropriate order and layout for the CV's, and we thought about how we could fill the sections out more appropriately to fit around the job, in order to seem more suitable for the job, only mentioning appropriate past job experiences.

Designer maker inspiration - Jennifer Collier

Jennifer's work is some of the most detailed and delicate pieces I've ever came across. The level of detail is so high within her work the pieces look identical to the real items. I love the delicate use of colour and pattern within these particular pieces of work that I have placed images of here:

A little quote from Jennifer to inspire...

"My practice focuses on creating work from paper; by bonding, waxing, trapping and stitching I produce unusual paper ‘fabrics’, which are used to explore the ‘remaking’ of household objects. The papers are treated as if cloth, with the main technique employed being stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. The papers themselves serve as both the inspiration and the media for my work, with the narrative of the books and papers suggesting the forms. I tend to find items then investigate a way in which they can be reused and transformed; giving new life to things that would otherwise go unloved or be thrown away."

Claire A. Baker

Claire A Baker is a textile and surface designer specialising in embroidery and also a designer maker who creates accessories for fashion and the home, stationery, tableware, collage, framed artwork and greetings cards.

Claire's embroidery work is some of the most beautiful and detailed work I have seen before, there is so much detail to each piece that you could literally look at it for hours and still find something interesting that you never noticed before, here is just three of my favourites.

Vintage Paper Rosette - £10, Winged Lady Brooch - £13.95, Limited Edition Linen Bag - £59, Love You ring - £15

Again literally the most detailed, beautiful pieces from Claire's ceramic collection. The dark fairytale theme is so clear throughout the pieces through use of complementary colours and use of imagery and design of the pieces.

Kate Wilson

Graduate from the University of the Arts with 1st class honours in BA illustration. I love the illustrations in Kate's work, they are very creative and quirky, I also love the sensitive use of colour, textured backgrounds and the quirky quotes describing the illustration, giving the work a unique style.

Emily Morris

Emily graduated from Leeds College of Art with a degree in textiles and surface pattern design and is now looking for suitable projects that could use her amazingly detailed laser cut paper panel talents.

Emily uses very few colours within her work, more one colour and lots of different tones of that colour to describe the tone within her drawings and cut outs, these recent works are so incredibly detailed its hard to imagine how she had the patience to complete them...

Helen has just graduated from Leeds College of Art and Design, with a degree in printed textiles and surface pattern design, Helen is now based in Liverpool and is available for freelance work and commissions.

I love how Helen creates detailed drawings and places them in a lovely repeat pattern, with pastel colours for backgrounds that complement the illustrations.
